When I initiate playback on one of my files, it will either crash and close automatically, or initiate playback with an unintentional midi (harp parts get played back with the Xylophone midi). I ran scans on my download of musescore and the file I attempted to run. No viruses/items were reported.

Using musescore 1.0. This only happens with 2 symphony files. No viruses/items found when scanned.
It will be hard to make a diagnosis without seeing the files. Could you attach one of them ? Or a link to one of them ?
When I split my file into two parts, it worked with no error. I think musescore can't play scores that are around 8 minutes in length and with 23 instruments.
One of the biggest scores I know made with MuseScore is Beethoven 5th symphony, movement 3 and 4. It's a 16 instrument scores, almost 1000 measures, and duration around 15 minutes and it does play for me. I don't see a reason why it should crash with 23 instruments... but it's not possible to debug without such a file.
I think it may depend on the processing power of your computer. A more powerful computer would be able to handle the processing of a file that size with no problem, but a less powerful computer may drag and hang.
Could you upload the file?
As there has been no further information, I close this.
