The recording of the d2 note has a second, higher tone, producing an 'unpleasant' sound.

Steps:
Ensure the MuseScore_General.sf3 SoundFont is selected in View->Synthesizer, Fluid Tab.
Create new piano score.
Place a d2 note (of any duration) on the score.
Click the d2 note to hear playback.
Notice, in addition to the d2, a higher note is heard.

I'm not hearing this, and I'm listening carefully through reasonably good headphones. Is it possible you are simply noticing the natural overtones of this particular note more strongly than others for whatever reason (something about your soundcard, your speakers, your ears, etc)? If you still think there is something else going on, can you try exporting to MP3 and seeing if the problem persists for you, and if so, upload that somewhere (eg to Dropbox) and attach a link here so we can hear what you are hearing?

I have a friend who is very successful in the music production business. Golden ears.

He told me a story about a while ago when he and a very highly experienced and skilled, golden-eared engineer were producing in an excellent studio:

They were listening back to a just recorded track, enjoying it and thinking that it was very good.

One of the young players came into the room and asked, "What about the high squeal?"

They didn't know what he was talking about and said so. He persisted.

So, they slowed the trach down to 1/2 speed and sure enough a pitch they had not detected appeared.

Younger ears!

This experience changed their lives.

Have a great day, all.

It could be the natural overtones, but it seems like the duration of the sample is longer than even the adjacent e2 sample and the "off" tone I'm hearing comes in the extra duration. However, after switching to some headphones it's less apparent. I'm convinced this is not actually a bug, and a nuance of my setup. Sorry for the red herring!
