I've set up a score in C-Major and chosen piano and horn in f. The key given to me automatically for horn is G-Major (with F-Sharp marked). Why isn't this in F-Major (with B-Flat marked)?

Comments

You are transposing backwards. A concert pitch C is a G on an instrument in F. By definition concert F would be a C on that horn. To put the horn line in F you must make concert pitch B-flat.

And when you pick a key in the wizard, this specifies the *concert* pitch, not the transposed pitch. This is as it must be - consider. the vast majority of scores for horn are not for unaccompanied horn solo but combine it with other instruments, each of which might transpose differently.

If you are not familiar with how transposing instruments work, please see the Wikipedia article on the subject, or any other reference on musical instruments.
