Updated to 3.5.2, musescore3 crashing on startup

• Oct 21, 2020 - 19:22

I recently updated musescore3 on my PC to 3.5.2, and now I cannot run musescore. I boot it up, it shows me the initial blank score window for a second, then exits out without fanfare or notice. When I try to restart the program, it asks the usual "previous session closed unexpectedly" window, and no matter what option I choose, it boots up, then closes about 1 second in. Help?

Try starting by double-clicking a score rather than using the program icon - this bypasses the start center. if that works, turn off the start center in Edit / Preferences.

By this time you will know from previous posts that I am a well-known "beneficiary" of this strange behaviour - but whenever I sent in the score that it was crashing on, no-one else could get it to crash.
So let me get this right - it's still happening for some folk? (yes, including me) - is there any work being done to solve the problem or have we exhausted all lines of investigation?
Many thanks. PS Disabling the start centre and/or double-clicking - none of this works every time.

There are no doubt scores that cause MuseScore to crash when they are opened and many of these scores have been uploaded into the forum and someone has looked into why they cause the crash. Many bugs have been discovered and fixed as a result so if you have a specific score leading to a crash, please uploaded it so if it is still a problem in version 3.5.2 it can be fixed for 3.6. All crashes are taken seriously and given priority by programmers to fix.

The specific case of the start center always crashing MuseScore for some people is well known enough that many of us consider this the first thing to consider if their program keeps crashing. It is not the only possibility but based upon the info in this thread is the most likely cause for that user. If doing this does not work, the expectation is that the user will report back as much. It would be nice if they would report back that it did work to allow us to know that we've given sound advice but that doesn't always happen.

After writing the previous 2 paragraphs that I stand behind, I now see that you experienced crashes while I was away from the forum in your post at https://musescore.org/en/node/302240. I will look into that to see if I can reproduce the crash. I have a lot of faith in the abilities of the people who responded there but there must be something happening or you would not have posted the problem. Will you please see if that reported crash still happens in 3.5.2 and if you're willing we can meet to continue this discussion in the appropriate thread at https://musescore.org/en/node/302240.

I got this too. My workaround was to run with the -w command line option to disable the webview. This can be enabled permanently as follows:

  1. In the Start Menu, right click on MuseScore icon > More > Open file location.
  2. In File Explorer, right click on MuseScore 3 shortcut > Properties.
  3. In the Properties dialog, open the "Shortcut" tab.

Now edit the "Target" field so that it ends with "-w" (space, dash, letter w). Here's my target field:

"C:\Program Files\MuseScore 3\bin\MuseScore3.exe" -w
