IMV, the new algorithm works very well. However, the user will quite frequently need or prefer to override the default placement.
Suggestion: a new "Placement" section in the Inspector which would allow the user to select an alternative position for the currently selected fingering(s).

Perhaps a dropdown list in the "Fingering section" of the Inspector with AUTO, LEFT etc. as options? This would also allow the placement of LH Guitar FIngering in 2.x files to be preserved by automatically selecting "LEFT" on import.

On second thoughts, this needs to be left open pending further discussion at #280807: Regression - 3.0 doesn’t distinguish between fingerings and LH guitar fingerings..
In https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/4591, changing the text style between piano, lh guitar, rh guitar, string number, and user algorithms will also change the layout algorithms which are different for each of these (well, piano and rh guitar are the same currently).
