It could be handy to change the height of a slur without changing its symetry.
Currently slurs are defined by 4 points and 4 handles are displayed in edit mode. It could be handy to move the two middle handles together, maybe with a fifth handler to easily increase the height of the slur without changing the symetry.

I like this very much. I think that 5th point could also be used to manipulate the whole slur in any direction, not only un and down.

Finale does this, but the results usually don't look right unless the slur is level (starts and ends on the same pitch for example). Could you give the context for this? When is it that you need to symmetrically adjust vertical height?

The slur doesn't need to be level, if the symetric axis is not vertical, but in a 90° angle to the connecting line.
In that case I think there's really only a need for 3 handles, left, right and middle.

Doesn't convince me, most of them are symetrical (but with a non-vertical axis), and the ones that are not could easily be.

But having 5 handles with the middle one being reponsible for keeping the slur symetrical would still be better that the current 4.

For what it is worth, Sibelius has six handles!

Another option would be to make it possible to select more than one handle at the same time (similar to nodes in Inkscape). That way you could shift two at once using the arrow keys.

I figured out how to incorporate ties from note to note in my already-written piece, but when I insert a tie, the lyrics under the notes disappear. Can someone help me out? Thanks very much.

@CRE: you're at the wrong place here, this issue is totally unrelated and you should better go to the support forum.
Other than that: you probably want a slur rather than a tie
