This is a problem with some bracketed instruments: Piano, clavichord, bandonian, harmonium, electric piano, celesta, harpsichord, marimba, tuned klaxon horns, almglocken and harp.

1. In Instrument, choose piano.
2. Remove either the bass or treble clef.
3. Done.

Expected behaviour: Instruments presented in a single staff should not have a bracket.
Actual behaviour: A squashed bracket appears.

Workaround: Right-click the bracket and delete.

Using MuseScore 1.0 and 2.0 nightly build (4130) - Mac 10.4.11.

Comments

I think this comes under the same bug and could be fixed when this is. If anyone thinks otherwise, I'll file it as a separate issue.

1. In Instrument, add all that's in the keyboard section.
2. Remove multiple staves (leaving a minimum of one per instrument).
3. Click Done.

Result: The left side of the system features overlapping brackets (image ).

Workaround: Add instruments individually.

Using MuseScore 1.0 and 2.0 nightly build (4130) - Mac 10.4.11.

FWIW (which is really probably not much), using 0.9.6.3 and Windows 7, I could reproduce the original issue, but the secondary issue in post #1 was not an issue in 0.9.6.3, so that one appears to be a regression. In the second issue, however, while the brackets didn't overlap, they were still there, but I would think that falls under the original issue. Hope it helps.

Regarding #2, if you create a voice only (possibly affects other single bracket instruments), the bar line will not appear at the start.

Elaine Gould writes in "Behind Bars": about organ notation:
"A single-stave manual part must take a compressed curly brace if there is also a pedal stave present, to distinguish the two: a pedal stave never takes a brace".

So i conclude that a single staff with a curly brace is valid notation and mscores behaviour is a feature instead of a bug :-)
