Whenever the bar gets too short, the crescendo is shrunk down to more of an accent-shape and is impossible to elongate.

I get that it's short, but if you're adding it in a place where there isn't room, I'm not sure what you expect? I also didn't have any trouble elongatng it - double click, either drag the handle to stretch it visually or shift+right to extend it over more notes. Does this not work for you?

There is clearly room for the crescendo, I attached a picture if you didn't see it. And I did try everything you said to try and elongate it, but no luck.

The decrescendo looks correct for being applied to a single 8th note in the context. You can either zoom in to see the handles or tab to the correct handle and extend it using shift+arrows or ctrl+arrows.

Yeah I tried that with no luck

Perhaps you are doing it wrong. Try these steps
Enter the decrescendo from the lines palette or by pressing the > key.
The decrescendo defaults to edit mode with the right handle selected
Press ctrl+ right arrow to make it look longer but only affect that note or shift+right arrow to extend it to the next note so it will be affected also.
If this doesn't work, perhaps you can make an animated GIF showing what you did. There are some fine programs out there that do it for free.

I can use the arrow keys but then it is too long. Clicking the handle still doesn't work

How did you get the decrescendo into that state? It looks like the decrescendo is under the second note, but the right anchor is under the last note. Show (or explain) how the hairpin got there. How you entered the hairpin is very important to helping you.

Also it works fine in the current version of Musescore perfectly

I used both methods of entering (double clicking the hairpin in the drop down menu and using shift+>)

Strange. I'm using OS: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.0.0.4042, revision: af128b5, which I downloaded yesterday.
Using all combinations of shift+click and ctrl+click method and double click the hairpin in the palette and pressing > gives me a correct descrescendo.
so it works fine in the current version of Musescore perfectly so it is fixed in Beta? Or what do you mean by current version?
I think I know what's going on here. Crescendos - hairpins and lines both - like to go over the barline when you put a dynamic on the first note. I like that, it looks nice.
But when there's a system break between the crescendo and the dynamic, it doesn't know how to deal with it and becomes as short as possible.
This is always reproducible for me.
And I'm in Beta. It's the auto align not knowing how to deal with a system break that is the issue.
Confirmed. Here is a simple example:
1) load attached score
2) add line break to bar 2
Result: what is described here - the crescendo becomes very short. For me it is still selectable and editable, but if I try to extend the length using right arrow (not Shift+right), it crashes.

Yeah thats exactly whats happening to me
Confirmed on my end as well. This only seems to happen when there is a dynamic in the following bar. Deleting the following dynamic causes the crescendo to display correctly.
This seems to be introduced by my changes, see the fix: https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/4288.
