Project

1. Create score.
2. Type a letter (e.g. E).
3. Disable 'Note Entry'.
4. Type another letter (e.g. D).

Expected result: 'Note Entry' becomes enabled and the note is entered.
Actual result: Nothing happens.

Using MuseScore 2.0 Nightly Build (0b96ea5) - Mac 10.7.5.

Fwiw, it's been suggested elsewhere that maybe typing a letter while not in Note Input should *not* automatically put you there. Instead, just replace the pitch, and perhaps move the cursor forward. I can't remember the arguments for or against, but if it seems like the current implementation is at all problematic, this could be worth revisitng.

indeed, 'N' is the letter to start and end note entry, nothing else (except for the coresponding button in the GUI of course)
Some letters in the A-G (or even A-H in German) might have different meanings as shortcuts outside of note entry mode

I disagree. I like it very much to be able to enter note entry mode by pressing A-G. It makes MuseScore look a bit more modeless and that's great.

Instead, just replace the pitch, and perhaps move the cursor forward.

There is no cursor if not in note entry.

Then 0 too (for a rest), and H (for the German B). colides with hairpin though

And there might not be a Cursor, but a selected note/rest to apply the pitch chang to?

But what's wrong with N to switch into (or out of) note entry first? If A-G does it already, why have N in addition?

It's probably not the best place to discuss design decision.

Why have N? because you might want to enter note entry somewhere but no enter a note.

H is not a shortcut for the german B as far as I know. 0 works just like A-G.

What else but a note or rest would you want to enter in Note Entry Mode? What else could be entered, that can't otherwise?
I know that H is not a shortcut for german B, it isn't because it is occupied by Hairpin.
But it should... > and < would be much better shortcuts for hairpins. Unfortunalty that doesn't work at all, see also #22306: "Reset Shortcut to Default" does not work, #22308: Changing shortcuts does not work and #20448: can't set shortcuts involving shift

Furthermore: A-G does not start Note Entry and enters the corresponding note, you'd need to press them twice for that?!?

To be clear: pressing A- has long (always?) automatically put you in note entry mode and entered the pitch. This isn't a new featuee; it's that way in 1.X. It's just that this feature apparently broke recently.

I am not strongly advocating the feature be removed, just thinking aloud, as I know others have proposed alternate behaviors. I don't consciously usethis featurer, but it's possible I take advantage of it without thinking.

And yes, it's true there is no "cursor" when not in note entry mode. I guess it's really the "selected" note I was thinking could move forward. The idea being that as I reall, the prior discussion had been that typong letters when not on note onlut mdoe should behave like repitch mode. And I suppose that's another possibility - that hitting a letter would put you in note inout mode but with repitch turned on. This stuff is indeed better discussed in forums, though.
